July 2008 - New Award for Selling Long Haul

Selling Long Haul has picked up a major Visit USA Association Travel Media Award for the 'Best Travel Trade Publication Feature'.

The award was presented at the Intercontinental Park Lane in London on July 2nd to the writer of the feature, Chris Coplans. His article, 'Rich Pickings', appeared in the March 2008 edition of Selling Long Haul (page 68) and gave travel agents an update on America's Golden State, California.

The Visit USA Association Travel Media Awards were created nine years ago to recognise and thank media for their contribution to the promotion of the USA through their work. Entries are judged on three main criteria:

1. the quality and factual accuracy of the writing

2. whether the feature actually makes readers want to pack their bags and visit

3. whether the feature gives clear information on which of the Association’s 200+ members can provide further assistance

A brand new Worldwide Golf and Spa supplement has been distributed with the May edition of Selling Long Haul magazine to help agents benefit from this important holiday sector.

The 36-page supplement is the first in a series of ‘Worldwide’ supplements which will also cover topics such as winter sports and luxury holidays in the months to come.

Worldwide 2008 Golf and Spa offers travel agents a valuable guide to the fast-expanding market of golf and spa holidays, the perfect combination for couples or groups where one or other of these two activities is the favoured option of everybody.

The quality of golf courses and spa facilities has increased enormously in recent years and the opportunities for travel agents to sell both – often in one complex – has seen a similar growth.

Worldwide 2008 Golf and Spa looks at golf and spa options around the world from the UK to New Zealand and everywhere in between.

December 2007 - The Business Travel Magazine: the best in the business!

The Business Travel Magazine is delighted to announce that it has been named Business Travel Publication of the Year 2007 at the Business Travel Journalism Awards. The event was held on December 4th at One Whitehall Place, London, and saw The Business Travel Magazine take the top prize amid stiff competition, just 13 months after launching.

The Business Travel Journalism Awards, now in their fourth year, are held in high regard across the industry and attracted sponsorship from Continental Airlines, Eurostar, Thistle Hotels, Qantas, Etihad and Lufthansa, among others.

Presenting the award, Andrew Waller, executive vice president UK, Carlson Wagonlit Travel, said: ”In a year during which coverage of business travel is at an all-time high, the choice of which publication does it best was, I’m told, a heated debate amongst the judges – particularly when, if you look more closely at all the titles, they aim to target slightly different audiences, from buyers to travellers and SMEs to multi-nationals. Based, however, on how well the winning title combines high quality reporting with compelling design and an easy-to-navigate format, the judges all concluded that The Business Travel Magazine thoroughly deserved this award.”

Said Martin Steady, managing director of Business Magazines International, publisher of The Business Travel Magazine: “We are absolutely thrilled to receive this award. Over the last year there has been an incredible combination of hard work and vision, and a determination by our publisher and our editorial and design departments to deliver a truly fit-for-purpose publication that combines superb content with visual impact and reader-friendliness.”

The ‘Best Green Media’ award was one of three with two green tour operator awards going to Exodus Travel and Intrepid Travel.

Commenting on the TAT Green Awards, HRH Princess Ubolratana of Thailand said “I would like to personally congratulate all the nominees and winners of today’s Green Awards, representing over 160 tour operators and many friends in the media, who work in close cooperation with the Tourism Authority of Thailand London. NOVEMBER 2006 - BMI Publications' newest title - and one of its most significant projects for some time - is The Business Travel Magazine, a publication specifically written for the arrangers of corporate travel and meetings.

Having decided not to renew an existing contract to publish an award-winning business travel title earlier this year, there was no way we were going to let our expertise in the sector go to waste. Consequently, after several months of research, interviews and meetings, The Business Travel Magazine was born.

The inaugural issue hit the printing press late in October and landed on the desks of over 18,000 readers on November 1. Behind The Business Travel Magazine are the very same publisher and design team that put together our previous business travel title, plus virtually the same editorial team and experienced list of journalists. The only missing piece of the jigsaw was an editor. And that's where Gillian Upton stepped in. A former editor of Business Traveller, and with over two decades of experience in the business travel journalism sector, she was the natural choice to work alongside us here at BMI Publications to produce what we are confident will become the leading publication in its field.
